In a significant reform for medico-legal practices, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has implemented a forensic expert-led autopsy system. This initiative aims to enhance the scientific accuracy of determining causes of death, reduce delays in post-mortem reports, and strengthen the evidentiary value of findings in court cases. The new framework, which follows a period of disruption due to the absence of a formal duty roster, places trained forensic specialists on fixed rotational duties at one of the state's busiest medico-legal centers. Previously, many autopsies were conducted by Provincial Medical Health Services (PMHS) doctors, who also had clinical responsibilities. Dr. NB Singh, the chief medical officer, noted that this marks a historic shift in Lucknow's medico-legal practices, as panel post-mortems will now be performed solely by forensic and toxicology experts. The consistent presence of these specialists is expected to improve precision in death investigations and enhance coordination with investigating agencies. KGMU conducts over 20 autopsies daily and manages around 7,500 to 8,000 cases annually from more than 52 police stations. The new system is anticipated to streamline workflows, cut report generation delays, and improve overall efficiency at this crucial facility.
