The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) has successfully completed the realignment of essential water pipelines on Old Bypass Road in Vellore’s Old Town, enabling the resumption of regular drinking water supply starting June 8. This initiative was undertaken to create space for foundation pillars for a new Road Over Bridge being constructed by Southern Railway. The decades-old pipelines have been relocated to prevent water seepage, ensuring that residents in tail-end areas receive adequate water supply. TWAD operates two major pumping stations in Old Town, capable of delivering a combined total of 54 lakh liters of water daily, which supports nearly half of Vellore's population across 60 wards. The realignment has involved shifting 700 mm pipelines 7.5 meters to the edge of the road, allowing for easier maintenance and repair without disrupting traffic. Given Vellore's water scarcity, especially in summer, the local water sources are vital for meeting the daily water needs of residents. TWAD currently provides about 63 million liters per day, while the overall demand stands at 83 million liters.
