Elkins was fatally shot during a police chase following the incident. Reports from the New York Post indicate that Elkins may have been struggling with mental health issues, as evidenced by a prayer he posted on Facebook that asked for help in guarding his mind against negativity and emotional turmoil. Authorities have confirmed that some of the victims were Elkins' own children, and the two injured women were also related to him. Elkins frequently shared updates about his family on social media, including a recent post about spending time with his eldest daughter just hours before the shooting. Additionally, he alluded to marital issues in a post questioning whether fathers would choose different partners if given the chance. The Shreveport Mayor, Tom Arceneaux, stated that it is still unclear whether Elkins died from self-inflicted wounds or was shot by police during the incident.
