On May 13, 2026, Kannada activists staged a protest in Belagavi, Karnataka, demanding that the Belagavi City Corporation pass a resolution declaring that Belagavi is an integral part of the state. The activists referenced the Mahajan Commission report, which they believe is final on the border dispute. Although a meeting was convened to discuss the issue, the resolution was not passed due to opposition from members of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti. Deputy Mayor Hanumanth Kongali had earlier promised that the resolution would be approved, but the corporation ultimately decided to refer the matter to the State government. Following the failed resolution, Ashok Chandargi, convenor of the central committee of Kannada organisations, criticized the BJP for not supporting the sentiment of Kannadigas and announced plans for further protests throughout the state. The police arrested 50 protestors during the demonstration but released them shortly after.
