SpaceX is gearing up to test its Starfall capsules, which are designed for in-orbit manufacturing and cargo delivery, following approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The capsules, measuring 10.2 feet in width and 2.5 feet in height, can carry a payload of up to 2,205 pounds (1,000 kilograms). They will be launched using either the Falcon 9 or Starship rockets and are designed with a carbon-fiber heat shield for protection during reentry. The FAA has sanctioned two reentry tests into the Pacific Ocean, although the timeline for these tests has not been specified. The Starfall project aims to tap into the growing field of in-orbit manufacturing, which leverages microgravity to produce materials that are challenging to create on Earth. SpaceX's entry into this sector could complement the efforts of companies like Varda Space Industries, which has already begun developing in-space manufacturing technologies. With plans to make Starfall operational by the end of the decade, SpaceX is positioning itself as a key player in this emerging industry.
