Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assembly on May 26. The proposed law will follow frameworks similar to those in Uttarakhand and Goa, but will exempt tribal communities and respect the state's religious traditions and customs. Additionally, the Assam Cabinet unveiled austerity measures, including a six-month ban on purchasing new vehicles and foreign trips for officials, aimed at reducing government expenditures. This announcement follows the BJP's significant electoral victory, securing 102 out of 126 Assembly seats.
