In its first meeting after the recent elections, the Assam Cabinet approved the tabling of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) tailored to protect the rights and customs of tribal communities. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the bill will be introduced in the Assembly on May 26, with the session starting on May 21. The proposed UCC will cover significant issues such as the minimum age for marriage, compulsory registration of marriages and divorces, the abolition of polygamy, and inheritance rights for women. Notably, the UCC will exempt all tribal people in Assam from its provisions, ensuring that their religious rituals and customs remain intact. This approach distinguishes Assam's UCC from those in other states like Uttarakhand, Goa, and Gujarat, which do not have similar safeguards for indigenous communities. Additionally, the Cabinet decided to form a task force led by the Chief Secretary to create 200,000 jobs in line with the BJP's election promises. In light of global economic uncertainties, the Cabinet also approved austerity measures, including a six-month freeze on new government vehicle purchases and restrictions on foreign travel for officials, except in emergencies. The government aims to reduce fuel expenditure for vehicles by 20% and prioritize the use of electric vehicles.
