A Calgary man, Nicholas Weseen, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of killing and injuring rabbits. The court heard distressing details about the abuse, including the case of a rabbit named Smokey, who had its rear right foot amputated with pliers and was left in a milk crate for days. Justice Michel Bourque described Weseen's actions as 'vile' and 'inconceivable,' emphasizing the extreme violence inflicted on the vulnerable animals. The judge noted that Weseen's offences were exceptionally grave, highlighting the prolonged suffering and death he caused to the rabbits, who were entirely dependent on him for care. In addition to the prison sentence, Weseen has been banned for life from owning or residing with animals, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the need to protect animals from such cruelty.
