L.S. Shashidhara, the Director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bengaluru, highlighted the urgent need for interdisciplinary research and robust ecological monitoring to enhance biodiversity conservation. Addressing an audience at Kuvempu University’s Environment Day programme, he stressed that effective conservation transcends mere scientific understanding, requiring political commitment, knowledge sharing, and sustainable economic policies. He urged students and researchers to engage in long-term environmental monitoring to tackle emerging ecological challenges. Prof. Shashidhara pointed out that ecosystems offer vital services such as climate regulation and crop pollination, which are directly beneficial to society. However, he warned that threats like habitat fragmentation, industrialization, and pollution jeopardize these systems. He emphasized the importance of genetic diversity in conservation efforts, using the management of lions and tigers as examples of how maintaining genetic health is crucial for the long-term survival of species. The event, organized by the Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Environmental Sciences, also included sapling planting on campus, attended by university officials and faculty members.
