On World Environment Day, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh urged citizens to engage in a mass movement for environmental protection and adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. Speaking at an event in Shimla, he emphasized the importance of conserving clean air, water, forests, and rivers, which he described as invaluable natural resources. Sukhu highlighted the state's significant contribution to ecological services, valued at nearly ₹90,000 crore annually, and expressed the government's commitment to advocate for the state's environmental concerns at the upcoming NITI Aayog meeting. He announced plans to increase forest cover to 32% by 2030 through various afforestation initiatives and revealed the addition of 297 electric buses to the Himachal Road Transport Corporation fleet. Furthermore, the establishment of two biochar plants was proposed to mitigate forest fire risks. In addition to environmental issues, Sukhu reiterated the government's resolve to combat drug abuse, noting the imprisonment of 174 drug traffickers and the seizure of assets worth ₹51 crore as part of their efforts against the drug mafia.
