In an effort to combat littering, Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons will pay shoppers to return bottles and cans under the new Deposit Return Scheme announced by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). This scheme, which is set to be implemented by October 2027, aims to tackle the issue of over 25 billion bottles and cans sold each year in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Shoppers can redeem a deposit on specific drinks containers when returned to collection points, such as supermarkets, without needing proof of purchase. The deposit will apply to single-use containers made primarily from aluminium, steel, or PET plastic with capacities between 150 millilitres and 3 litres. However, containers made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), such as milk bottles, and those used for liquid medicines will not be included in the scheme. This initiative is part of a broader effort to clean up communities and reduce waste in the environment.
