C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, representing the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party, which breaks a political tradition of nearly 60 years dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. During the ceremony, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, he declared that a new era of real, secular social justice begins now. Governor Rajendra Arlekar administered the oath to Vijay and his nine Cabinet members. In his inaugural speech, Vijay emphasized the importance of unity and governance, stating, 'There will be only one power centre, that is me.' He framed his victory as a response to the needs of the people, promising to address the state's significant debt, which he estimated at ₹10 lakh crore (approximately $1.2 trillion USD). His first decisions included providing 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers, establishing a women’s rapid action force for public safety, and creating narcotics prevention units across the state. This approach highlights his commitment to welfare and law enforcement. Vijay's attire at the ceremony marked a departure from traditional Tamil Nadu political dress, symbolizing a new political identity. His administration aims to connect with citizens through transparency and social justice, as he prepares to prove his majority in the Assembly by May 13.
