The Indian government has released ₹17,744 crore (approximately $2.1 billion USD) through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for April 2023. This funding aims to ensure uninterrupted implementation and timely payments, supported by a 21% increase in the budget allocation for the Ministry of Rural Development. Joint Secretary Amit Shukla emphasized that all statutory entitlements under MGNREGA are being safeguarded and that adequate provisions are in place to meet demand under both MGNREGA and the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY). The PMAY aims to construct 4.59 crore houses by March 2029, with real-time monitoring and support for material availability. Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) has received an increased outlay of ₹83,000 crore for Phase III, with ongoing road projects to enhance connectivity in rural areas. The government is also focusing on agricultural development through the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana 2.0, covering 50 lakh hectares to boost agricultural activities.
