The revenue department of the Delhi government has written to the Directorate of Education (DoE) requesting the termination of 142 guest teachers for failing to fulfill their duties as census enumerators. The letter, dated April 24, cites the teachers' refusal to comply with this statutory duty, which the revenue department claims could undermine the efforts of other staff involved in the census. However, the Delhi Government School Teachers’ Association (GSTA) has contested this recommendation, stating that guest teachers are not obligated to perform census work, unlike regular teachers. The GSTA's general secretary, Ajay Veer Yadav, emphasized that the timing of the terminations, just before the expiration of the teachers' contracts on May 8, is inappropriate. He also highlighted that guest teachers have not seen an increase in their daily remuneration of approximately ₹1,400 for nearly eight years, making it difficult for them to accept additional duties without compensation. Education Minister Ashish Sood acknowledged the importance of the census but indicated that exemptions would be considered for those with genuine medical emergencies. Some teachers have expressed that their refusal to participate stems from low salaries, health issues, and personal responsibilities, while others were unaware of their inclusion on the termination list.
