Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the first direct Vande Bharat Express train connecting Jammu and Srinagar, India, promising to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time. Previously, the journey by road could take 6.5 to 7 hours, often hindered by landslides on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH44). The new train service will complete the journey in less than five hours, operating six days a week starting from May 2. The train covers approximately 266 km, departing from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 am and reaching Srinagar at 11:10 am. The route showcases remarkable engineering feats, including the world’s highest rail arch bridge over the Chenab River and India’s longest tunnel, measuring 12.77 km. This railway line not only eases traffic congestion but also provides a reliable means for transporting local products, such as apples and handicrafts, to markets across India. With over five lakh travelers and nearly two crore kg of apples transported since its operation, the Vande Bharat Express is set to transform travel and commerce in the region.
