The Karnataka government has announced plans to establish three sustainable data centre parks in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Mangaluru, with a combined capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW). This initiative aims to strengthen the state's digital infrastructure while addressing environmental concerns associated with large-scale data centres, particularly their heavy reliance on water and electricity. The largest park will be located near Hoskote on the outskirts of Bengaluru, with a capacity of 500 MW, and will utilize solar energy from the Pavagada Solar Park. Water needs will be met using treated water, with the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board capable of supplying 60 million litres per day (MLD). The government has emphasized the importance of sustainability, with IT Minister Priyank Kharge noting that each MW of data centre capacity requires an investment of approximately ₹70 crore (around $8.4 million USD) and significant water resources. Discussions are ongoing to ensure an uninterrupted power supply and to identify suitable land for the Mysuru park. The initiative reflects Karnataka's ambition to lead in digital infrastructure while being mindful of environmental trade-offs.
