The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India has made a significant advancement in hypersonic missile technology by successfully testing a scramjet combustor that achieved a runtime of 1,200 seconds. Conducted at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) facility in Hyderabad, this test builds on a previous successful test of over 700 seconds conducted in January. The hypersonic cruise missile, powered by an innovative air-breathing engine, is capable of speeds exceeding 6,100 km/h. The Ministry of Defence highlighted that this achievement positions India at the forefront of advanced aerospace capabilities and emerging military technologies. The scramjet combustor incorporates a unique flame stabilization technique and utilizes an indigenous endothermic fuel developed collaboratively by DRDL and industry partners, enhancing cooling and ignition efficiency. Furthermore, the development of a new advanced ceramic thermal barrier coating (TBC) is crucial for withstanding the extreme temperatures experienced during hypersonic flight. As several countries, including the US and China, continue to pursue hypersonic technology, India's advancements signify a crucial step in enhancing its military capabilities against existing air defense systems.
