The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) has announced the discontinuation of the CMRL travel card, encouraging users to adopt the Singara Chennai Card, which utilizes National Common Mobility technology. This transition is part of a broader initiative to enhance public transport payment systems across India, with a complete switch planned for May 1, 2026. Users of the CMRL travel card can transfer any remaining balance to the Singara Chennai Card or a QR Stored Value Pass through the CMRL Mobile App. The Singara Chennai Card, issued by the State Bank of India, is a contactless prepaid card that not only facilitates fare payments across various modes of transport, including Metro and buses, but also allows for retail transactions and ATM withdrawals, provided full KYC is completed. CMRL aims to ensure a secure and seamless travel experience for all commuters.
