The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has taken significant steps to address safety concerns by approving a ₹44 lakh project aimed at repairing nearly 900 damaged streetlights across the cantonment area. This decision follows months of complaints from residents and military personnel regarding poorly lit roads, which posed risks of accidents, theft, and harassment. An internal survey revealed that about 900 out of 5,000 streetlight fittings had become non-functional over the past two years, particularly affecting major roads like M G Road, East Street, Sachapir Street, and Solapur Highway, which experience heavy traffic. PCB officials acknowledged that financial constraints had delayed repairs, but emphasized that safety concerns could no longer be ignored. PCB chief executive officer Vidyadhar Pawar announced that work will commence within a fortnight, with the goal of completing it before the monsoon season. Local residents have welcomed the decision but are urging for timely execution to ensure enhanced safety and visibility in the cantonment area.
