The Indian Army anticipates the induction of the Zorawar light tank in 2028-29, following the resolution of development issues. Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi confirmed that the tank's design is being refined to meet operational needs, particularly against Chinese forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Originally expected in 2027, the Zorawar will bolster the army's capabilities with its 25-tonne weight and advanced technology tailored for high-altitude operations. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Larsen & Toubro under Project Zorawar, the tank aims to fulfill the requirement for 354 units at an estimated cost of ₹17,500 crore. The Zorawar is designed for mobility, firepower, and surveillance, and can be transported by air, enhancing its deployment speed. The tank is named after General Zorawar Singh, who achieved significant victories in the region during the 19th century. This initiative reflects India's commitment to self-reliance in defense capabilities, addressing unique operational demands in its diverse geography.
