In Jammu and Kashmir, the cherry season has seen the successful dispatch of around 43 tonnes of fresh cherries to major markets across India via rail services. Officials reported that cherries have been sent as railway parcels using SLR (Second Class Luggage Van) and parcel vans, reaching destinations like Surat, Bandra, Bhopal, and Chhayapuri in Vadodara. This rail initiative is proving beneficial for traders and fruit growers, as it allows for faster delivery without compromising quality, enabling farmers to secure better prices for their produce. The senior divisional commercial manager of the Jammu division, Uchit Singhal, emphasized the Railways' commitment to providing efficient logistics solutions to the agricultural community. By utilizing parcel space in passenger trains, the initiative is not only enhancing market access for farmers but also generating additional revenue for Indian Railways. As a result, fruit growers are increasingly relying on rail transport, effectively bypassing the uncertainties associated with road transport.
