The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken significant action in response to widespread irregularities in birth and death registrations across Mumbai, uncovering over 87,000 unauthorized changes made by Medical Health Officers (MHOs) between 2024 and 2026. The irregularities were discovered during a drive aimed at identifying illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya migrants. As a result, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide approved a five-point reform plan, which includes suspending two MHOs and initiating a phased transfer of all MHOs across the city's 24 wards. The probe revealed that corrections were made using an outdated SAP-CPWM system instead of the required Civic Registration System (CRS) portal. In light of these findings, the BMC has also directed its IT department to revoke all SAP systems and has launched an independent inquiry into the violations. This crackdown on undocumented immigrants has been intensified following directives from the new mayor, Ritu Tawde, to remove illegal hawkers from the streets.
