A recent report by NITI Aayog reveals that only 9.64% of schools in Kerala provide continuous education from Class I to XII, indicating significant fragmentation in the schooling system. This report, titled ‘School education system in India: temporal analysis and policy roadmap for quality enhancement’, shows that Kerala outperforms states like West Bengal, which has only 0.91% of its schools integrated, and Bihar with 1.4%. In total, Kerala has 15,757 schools, with 6,359 being primary schools. Despite high enrolment rates across educational stages—93.2% in primary, 98.8% in upper primary, and 98.7% in secondary—Kerala faces a 4.8% dropout rate at the secondary level, the highest among all stages. Transition rates from primary to upper primary education are nearly universal at 99.3%, but the report highlights the need for improved support to reduce dropout rates, especially in secondary education, where economic pressures and weak institutional support are significant factors.
