Australia is on the verge of finalizing a landmark security pact with Fiji as part of its efforts to maintain influence in the Pacific amid increasing competition from China. Pat Conroy, Australia's Pacific minister, emphasized the need for Australia to be the 'partner of choice' in the region, highlighting the importance of the new agreement. This pact is designed to strengthen defense ties and address pressing security issues, particularly transnational crime and drug smuggling, which Conroy identified as significant threats to Fiji. Australia has previously established strategic agreements with other Pacific nations, including the Falepili Union with Tuvalu and the Nauru-Australia Treaty. The growing military presence of China, which has been conducting naval operations in the region, adds urgency to Australia's diplomatic efforts. Conroy noted that while negotiations are ongoing, the security element of the agreement is crucial for both nations' future cooperation.
