On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet of India approved a proposal to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from 34 to 38, which includes the Chief Justice of India. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the current composition of the court includes 33 judges and the Chief Justice. A bill to formalize this increase will be introduced in the next session of Parliament. The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act 1956 originally set the maximum number of judges (excluding the Chief Justice) at 10. This number has been amended several times, increasing to 13 in 1960, 17 in 1960, 25 in 1986, and 30 in 2009. The last amendment in 2019 raised the number from 30 to 33 judges.
