In a significant move to combat youth unemployment, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will introduce the 'Jobcentre in your pocket' initiative, featuring AI tools aimed at assisting job seekers. This announcement is set for a speech on Monday, where Starmer will emphasize the need for technology to benefit all citizens, not just the affluent. The AI assistant, developed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), will offer around-the-clock support, helping users with CV creation and job search strategies. This initiative comes in response to concerning figures revealing that over a million young people aged 16 to 24 are currently not engaged in education, employment, or training (NEET), with predictions indicating the situation may worsen. The government plans to trial these AI tools for three months, with a broader rollout expected from Autumn 2027, targeting nearly half a million children eligible for free school meals. Additionally, an AI bootcamp scheme will be launched this summer to support those at risk of unemployment. Business Secretary Peter Kyle has stated that the government will take more significant risks in backing British innovation and growth.
