The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has directed banks to validate Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs) linked to FASTags due to complaints of discrepancies between the numbers detected by scanners and those displayed on vehicles. This verification is crucial for the implementation of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, which enables vehicles to pass through toll gates without stopping, thus enhancing traffic efficiency on busy highways. The MLFF system relies on advanced technologies like Radio Frequency Identification and Automatic Number Plate Recognition to ensure accurate toll collection. NHAI noted that many mismatches stem from FASTags issued before integration with the VAHAN (National Vehicle Registry) database, which had limited validation processes. To prevent misuse, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has introduced new rules stating that unpaid tolls will incur double charges unless settled within 72 hours. The MLFF system is set to be operational at 16 toll plazas, with Gharaunda in Haryana and Choryasi in Gujarat among the first to implement barrier-free tolling. Currently, the average daily FASTag collection on national highways is approximately ₹186 crores (around $22.4 million USD).
