The tragic death of Nithin Raj R L, a 22-year-old Dalit medical student from Thiruvananthapuram, has ignited protests in Kerala's Kannur district. Nithin died after falling from a building at a private dental college, with investigations revealing he had taken a ₹13,500 loan from an unregulated online lending app, which pressured him for ₹19,000 repayment within a month. Police reported that he received 96 calls in a single day from the lenders, indicating severe harassment. Additionally, allegations of caste discrimination at the college have surfaced, with claims that Nithin faced humiliation related to his caste and family background. A case has been registered under the abetment of suicide and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against two faculty members. The Kerala University of Health Sciences has launched a high-level inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Nithin's death, with the Vice Chancellor promising strong action if wrongdoing is found.
