During a congressional hearing, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman disclosed that the habitation modules for the Lunar Gateway, a crucial part of NASA's Artemis program, have been affected by corrosion. This revelation was met with skepticism from some in the space industry, who questioned Isaacman's credibility. However, Northrop Grumman, the primary contractor for the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO), later confirmed that there were manufacturing irregularities. The European Space Agency (ESA) also acknowledged corrosion in its habitation module, I-HAB. Both modules were manufactured by Thales Alenia Space, a French-Italian firm, which remained silent until a statement was released five days after Isaacman's comments. Thales indicated that they are working with Northrop Grumman and ESA to address the issues, which they described as a “well-known metallurgical behavior.” They expect to resolve the problems by the end of the third quarter of 2026. Axiom Space, which has ordered a pressurized structure from Thales for its private space station, reported experiencing similar issues, highlighting concerns about the integrity of space infrastructure.
