In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, Gujarat police launched 'Operation Mule Hunt 1.0', uncovering a cyber fraud network worth ₹2,289 crore and arresting 638 individuals. The operation targeted 913 mule bank accounts and registered 565 FIRs as part of a statewide effort to dismantle the financial infrastructure supporting cybercriminals. Conducted under the supervision of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, this initiative involved collaboration between various police units and financial institutions. The operation led to a 75% reduction in cheque withdrawals linked to suspicious transactions, and a 30% decrease in first-layer mule accounts was noted between August and December 2025. The Reserve Bank of India is also developing an AI-based risk-scoring framework to better monitor these accounts. This operation reflects a broader national push for digital security in response to the surge in cyber fraud cases across India, as internet usage has dramatically increased in recent years.
