Gujarat Police launched Operation Mule Hunt 1.0 in December 2025, targeting cyber-enabled financial crimes and uncovering a staggering ₹2,289 crore in fraud linked to mule bank accounts. This operation involved multiple police units and resulted in the registration of 565 FIRs and 638 arrests. Authorities identified 913 mule accounts that facilitated money laundering and recorded 4,052 cybercrime cases, with 491 occurring in Gujarat. The operation led to a significant reduction in suspicious banking activities, with cheque withdrawals decreasing by 75% and monthly cheque transactions dropping from ₹126 crore to ₹25 crore. To enhance detection of fraudulent activities, the Reserve Bank of India is implementing AI-based systems to categorize transaction risks. Additionally, a new registry, mulehunter.ai, has been created to allow banks to share information about suspected mule accounts, reflecting a broader national strategy to combat the rising threat of cybercrime alongside increasing digital transactions.
