The Surat Municipal Corporation elections marked a significant victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which regained the confidence of the Patidar community, crucial to the region's diamond business. The BJP increased its vote share from 48.93% in 2021 to 58.51%, winning 115 out of 120 seats. In contrast, the Congress party managed to secure only one seat, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won four seats. The elections saw 483 candidates contesting, with the BJP fielding 120 candidates. The Patidar voters, primarily migrants from Saurashtra and northern Gujarat, had previously shown support for Congress after the 2015 quota agitation, but this election reversed that trend. Despite facing public anger in certain areas, the BJP benefited from a split in opposition votes, allowing them to secure a commanding majority. The total voter turnout was noted at 49.23 lakh, with 24,198 votes cast for NOTA, indicating some discontent among voters.
