A special court in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, has sentenced Mohamed Shariq to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for spreading the ideology of the Islamic State (ISIS) and raising funds for the terrorist organization. The court also imposed a fine of βΉ92,000 (approximately $1,100 USD) on Shariq, who is also implicated in the 2022 Mangaluru pressure cooker blast case. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) revealed that Shariq was radicalized by his associate Arafath Ali, who is serving a six-year sentence for his involvement in a related conspiracy. Shariq conspired with co-accused Syed Yasin and a foreign-based ISIS handler to promote terror activities in India, including plans for IED attacks. In November 2022, Shariq attempted to detonate an IED in Mangaluru, but it exploded prematurely, injuring himself and another individual. Following the incident, the NIA arrested two individuals and dismantled a larger Islamic State terror module involved in anti-India conspiracies.
