Recent research on Libyan Desert Glass, a material found in ancient Egyptian artifacts, including those in King Tutankhamun's tomb, has revealed significant insights into its formation. Scientists from the University of Milano-Bicocca discovered a rare zircon inclusion within the glass that indicates it formed during an extreme cosmic event approximately 29 million years ago. The zircon suggests temperatures exceeded 4,082°F, which is significantly hotter than typical volcanic activity. This finding supports theories that the glass was created either by an asteroid impact or an explosion of a space object in the atmosphere, though no impact crater has been definitively linked to the glass. The zircon's unique dendritic structure indicates it crystallized rapidly from molten material, preserving a record of the violent conditions that created the glass. Despite this evidence of extreme heating, the debate regarding the exact origin of Libyan Desert Glass remains unresolved.
