The user had spent eight weeks attempting to brute-force the password for their current Blockchain.com wallet, testing approximately 3.5 trillion combinations using the btcrecover service, with a total GPU expenditure of around $15. The breakthrough came when the user decided to search their entire college computer, leading Claude to discover a backup from December 2019. The backup was encrypted with a password that the user had noted down, which successfully decrypted the wallet and revealed the same private keys controlling their current funds. The incident illustrates how AI can assist nontechnical users in navigating complex tasks like file recovery, especially as millions of Bitcoin remain inaccessible due to lost passwords or recovery phrases.
