OpenAI has publicly endorsed the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), which aims to improve online protections for children. This endorsement is part of OpenAI's commitment to establish specific safety rules for AI technologies, especially in light of its ongoing legal challenges. KOSA, which passed the Senate in 2024, requires social media platforms to implement measures such as allowing minors to opt out of addictive features and algorithmic recommendations. The bill also imposes a 'duty of care' on online platforms to mitigate harmful content that could lead to issues like eating disorders, suicide, and sexual exploitation. Other tech giants, including Apple, Microsoft, and Snap, have also backed the legislation. However, some trade groups, like NetChoice, argue that KOSA could enable censorship without effectively safeguarding children online. Privacy advocates, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have expressed opposition to the bill. OpenAI's Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes in social media safety, stating that stronger safeguards should have been implemented earlier. The endorsement comes as OpenAI faces lawsuits related to safety lapses in ChatGPT, including one involving a teen's suicide and another concerning a drug overdose linked to the chatbot's advice.
