The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has permitted the withdrawal of prosecution against Ram Chander Yadav, a BJP MLA representing Rudauli in Ayodhya district, in connection with the 2012 idol immersion riot case. The decision, made on May 4, overturned a trial court's previous rejection of the state's application. Justice Rajeev Singh noted that the public prosecutor had filed the application in good faith after reviewing the case materials. The riots began on October 24, 2012, when tractors carrying idols for immersion caused a traffic jam near the Rudauli police station. Yadav allegedly instructed drivers to stop, leading to a large gathering and subsequent violence. An FIR was filed against him after the incident, which resulted in injuries to police personnel and community members. The state government sought to withdraw the prosecution in June 2020, but the trial court rejected this request. Following high court directions, the state and Yadav appealed, resulting in the court's recent decision to allow the withdrawal.
