The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination, which was scheduled for May 3, due to a significant paper leak that revealed over 100 actual questions in a 'guess paper.' In response, Tamil Nadu's new Chief Minister Vijay has called for the abolition of the NEET exam, stating that it disproportionately affects students from rural areas and those educated in Tamil medium. He highlighted that this is not the first instance of NEET being compromised, referencing a similar incident in 2024 that led to multiple FIRs and a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Chief Minister emphasized the need for reforms, citing a report from a committee led by Dr. K Radhakrishnan, which provided 95 recommendations for improvement. The Tamil Nadu government has long advocated for the ability to fill medical seats based on Class 12 marks rather than through NEET, which they argue favors affluent, urban students. Previous legislative attempts to exempt the state from NEET have been rejected, including a bill by former Chief Minister MK Stalin, which was turned down by the President.
