The Supreme Court of India has ordered the central government to regularize daily wage workers at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) within four weeks. This ruling comes after the court observed that these workers, employed between 1991 and 1997, have played indispensable roles in the success of India's space missions. The court criticized the government's delay in addressing the workers' status, noting that they had been subjected to prolonged litigation despite a previous directive in 2011 to regularize their employment. Justice Vikram Nath highlighted that the contributions of these workers, often overlooked, are crucial for operational efficiency in space missions. The court rejected the government's argument that these workers performed only sporadic tasks and emphasized that all workers, regardless of their roles, deserve recognition and fair treatment. The ruling also extends to all similarly situated workers engaged under the 2012 Gang Labourers Scheme, ensuring that they receive permanent status retroactively from September 9, 2010.
