On May 4, Mills Pond Elementary School in Smithtown, New York, celebrated Star Wars Day with a series of engaging activities designed to promote creativity and learning. Library media specialist Meghan Dyckova transformed the library into an interactive galaxy, where third- and fourth-grade students participated in engineering challenges to design and build rebel bases using Magna-Tiles and LEGOs. This hands-on activity fostered problem-solving and teamwork skills. Younger students also joined in the fun, creating Yoda puppets with high school helpers and enjoying a Star Wars-themed read-aloud session. Additionally, kindergarten classes crafted mini lightsabers using straws and small lights, while all students participated in a Jedi-themed workout, adding energy to the day. This celebration successfully turned a pop culture moment into an educational experience, emphasizing collaboration and imaginative play.
