Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the Congress MP from Ludhiana, Punjab, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a ban on the upcoming ZEE5 docu-series ‘Lawrence of Punjab’. In his letter dated April 23, Warring described the series as a dangerous glorification of crime, focusing on the life of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is linked to the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. Warring emphasized that Punjab, known for its rich cultural and spiritual heritage, should not be identified with gangsterism. He expressed concerns that the series could negatively influence young viewers, drawing them towards crime rather than discouraging it. The Punjab Police's Cyber Crime wing has also formally requested the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to block the series, citing risks of public disorder and youth radicalization. This request follows multiple court orders against content that glorifies Bishnoi. Warring has previously filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the series, which is scheduled to premiere on April 27, 2023, raising concerns about its potential impact on society.
