Alberta Health Services (AHS) stated that this policy is designed to enhance workplace safety by minimizing tripping hazards and ensuring adequate seating for patients and their companions. Any additional bags will be securely stored by the hospital's security team, which will also inspect all bags for prohibited items. The policy does not apply to essential medical devices or childcare items. AHS emphasized that limiting the number of support people will help reduce noise and create more space for those who need to be present. Exceptions for patients requiring additional support can be granted by staff. These changes come in response to an assault that occurred in the emergency department earlier this month, prompting the Alberta government to expedite the implementation of a broader security plan for the hospital.
