The Los Angeles Unified School District is taking significant steps to limit screen time among its 500,000 students by introducing a new policy aimed at reducing excessive device usage. This initiative will establish age-based daily and weekly limits on screen time, and younger students will be prohibited from using devices during lunch and breaks. Additionally, platforms such as YouTube will be blocked on school devices. This policy is currently pending board approval and is expected to be implemented in the 2026-2027 school year. Board member Nick Melvoin emphasized that while technology is an integral part of education, the focus is on rethinking the use of school time to enhance student well-being. The move comes in response to research from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has linked excessive screen time to various health issues, including anxiety and lower academic performance. This new crackdown follows a prior cellphone ban enacted in 2024 and aligns with the Phone-Free School Act, which mandates schools to limit smartphone use by July 1, 2026.
