A significant fraud involving ₹7.31 crore has been uncovered at the Canara Bank's Badnapur branch in Jalna district, Maharashtra. Police reported that the fraud involved the theft of gold ornaments from gold loan accounts, which were then replaced with fake jewellery. During a routine quarterly revaluation, officials discovered that 22 gold loan packets contained fake jewellery valued at ₹3.79 crore, while 30 packets of genuine gold worth ₹3.52 crore were reported missing from the bank's strong room. CCTV footage revealed a bank officer allegedly stealing gold packets and hiding them. The branch manager is accused of negligence for allowing the officer unsupervised access to the strong room. Following a complaint from a senior bank official, police registered a case against the branch manager, another officer, and a gold appraiser on charges of criminal breach of trust and fraud. Two individuals have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing to determine if a larger conspiracy is involved.
