The RIMS-2 hospital project in Ranchi, India, marked a significant milestone on Thursday with the initiation of boundary wall construction following a bhumipujan (groundbreaking ceremony). This event was conducted under a heavy security presence to prevent any disturbances. Despite the peaceful execution of the ceremony, localized protests occurred as indigenous tribal farmers marched from Nagri to the Ranchi Collectorate, expressing their opposition to the acquisition of fertile agricultural land for the project. Local resident Vikash Toppo emphasized the community's demand for the hospital to be relocated to barren land to protect their ancestral livelihoods. Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan stated that the primary goal was to ensure the administrative process proceeded without disruption while respecting the community's emotional ties to their land. The health department aims to establish a self-sustaining, international-standard healthcare institution with financial backing from the Asian Development Bank. However, the villagers' refusal to relent and their calls for administrative intervention indicate that tensions surrounding the Nagri site remain high and sensitive.
