On May 27, Piyush Goyal, India's Commerce and Industry Minister, expressed optimism about concluding a trade agreement with Canada by the end of 2026, highlighting the services sector as a crucial component of the negotiations. During his address in Ontario, he noted that India's strengths in services and talent would play a significant role in discussions with his Canadian counterpart. The two nations aim to enhance bilateral trade and investment through a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which resumed negotiations earlier this year after signing the Terms of Reference in March. The ambitious target set is to triple bilateral trade from approximately $17 billion to $50 billion by 2030. Goyal emphasized the need for businesses to provide feedback on market access issues, which can help negotiators address barriers effectively. He also mentioned discussions on various sectors, including artificial intelligence and clean energy, and reiterated the importance of educational ties, proposing a dual-degree program for students from both countries.
