Tata Power is setting up a solar manufacturing facility in Gangaikondan, a town near Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, with an investment of ₹4,300 crore (approximately $517 million USD). The project aims to address the local talent gap by implementing extensive skilling programs, particularly targeting women from surrounding communities. Currently, the facility employs over 3,000 workers, with 80% being women engaged in various roles, including production and quality inspection. The facility produces about 12MW of solar modules daily and is designed to have a capacity of 4.3GW for both module and cell manufacturing, making it one of the largest in India. Tata Power has collaborated with the state skill development corporation to conduct recruitment drives at local educational institutions, ensuring a workforce equipped with relevant skills. The company is also focused on achieving 70–75% localization in production, enhancing local supply chains and reducing reliance on imports. This initiative reflects a broader trend in Tamil Nadu, where significant investments are accompanied by efforts to improve labor readiness.
