In New Delhi, fire-related emergencies surged by 73% in April 2023, with 2,663 fire calls recorded, up from 1,538 in March and 1,096 in February. This increase has resulted in 32 deaths from January to April, with March alone accounting for 15 fatalities. The rise in incidents is attributed to higher temperatures and a notable increase in garbage and dry waste fires, which rose from 441 in January to 725 in April. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) recorded a total of 6,693 fire-related calls in the first four months of the year, amidst a broader total of 12,008 emergency calls. Despite the alarming increase in fire incidents, the DFS successfully rescued 837 individuals, with 261 rescues occurring in April, the highest for the year. However, the situation remains critical, as 10 deaths have already been reported in May, including a tragic incident on May 4 where a fire in a residential building in East Delhi's Vivek Vihar claimed the lives of nine people, including a toddler. The DFS also rescued 1,254 animals and 947 birds during the same period.
