India has adjusted its liquefied natural gas (LNG) import strategy following disruptions from major suppliers Qatar and the UAE due to the conflict in West Asia. In April, LNG imports rebounded to 1.95 million tonnes, with Oman, Nigeria, and the US stepping in to fill the gap left by the Gulf countries.
- 01India's LNG imports in April reached 1.95 million tonnes, recovering from 1.67 million tonnes in March.
- 02Oman, Nigeria, and the US accounted for 69% of India's LNG imports during March and April.
- 03Imports from Qatar and UAE dropped significantly, with only 0.06 million tonnes from Qatar in March-April.
- 04The Indian government increased gas allocation to the fertiliser sector to ensure urea production ahead of the kharif season.
- 05Global LNG exports saw a minor decline of 3.8% despite the disruption, with alternative suppliers partially offsetting the loss.

The ongoing conflict in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted India's liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from key exporters Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). As a result, India has diversified its import sources, turning to Oman, Nigeria, and the United States. In April, India's LNG imports rebounded to 1.95 million tonnes, up from 1.67 million tonnes in March, although year-on-year imports were down 9.3% from 2.15 million tonnes in April 2025. Oman emerged as the largest supplier, contributing 30-31% of total imports, while imports from Qatar and the UAE plummeted to 0.06 million tonnes and 0.13 million tonnes, respectively, during March and April. The Indian government responded to the supply disruption by prioritizing gas allocation for critical sectors like fertilisers, raising allocations to 98% to ensure uninterrupted urea production ahead of the kharif season. Despite the challenges, global LNG exports have not faced as severe a decline as initially feared, with alternative suppliers helping to stabilize the market.
