Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore will attend the 48th ASEAN summit in Cebu, Philippines on May 8, 2023. This summit, chaired by the Philippines, will focus on enhancing trade, energy, and food security in the region. Leaders will discuss accelerating the green energy transition amidst ongoing supply chain disruptions and rising energy prices due to tensions in the Middle East. The summit's theme, 'Navigating Our Future, Together', reflects ASEAN's commitment to deeper integration and cooperation in facing global challenges. Additionally, discussions will include a potential declaration on maritime cooperation and priority actions to bolster regional resilience. Wong will hold bilateral meetings with other leaders during the summit, accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. In his absence, K Shanmugam, Coordinating Minister for National Security, will serve as Acting Prime Minister on May 7, followed by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong from May 8 to 9.
